Investigates the value of design coding as a planning tool, which could hold the key to improved urban design and speedier planning processes. The ODPM with CABE and English Partnerships launched six schemes in May 2004 to trial design coding as part of the government response to the Barker and Egan reviews. Looks at Florida new town development, Seaside, as a model of design coding, which has inspired John Prescott's thinking in this area.
