Europe sets a test for the UK`s landfills

<br/><br/> Looks at proposals for a draft EC directive on landfill sites expected to be published this year. Either to be based on a prescribed set of rules to be enforced throughout the EC or a framework giving guidelines which could be applied on an individual basis for each site. The author argues that the UK would favour the regulatory approach. The existing regulatory system is critically assessed highlighting the problem of different bodies in the private and public sectors having responsibility for enforcement of existing regulations.
