Foot and mouth crisis - 2001 - MAFF Press Release (135/01) 20 April 2001 DoH Press Release (2001/0199) 24 April 2001 Daily Telegraph 25 April 2001, 6 Guardian 26 April 2001, 6(5) .

Update on developments in the foot and mouth crisis. The Environment Agency chief executive has called for the wider use of landfill sites to clear the carcass backlog, as public fears increase about the effects of burning pyres. Official MAFF statistics fail to represent the total number of animals slaughtered which is thought to be around 3.7m. From 28 April farmers will be less restricted in moving animals between premises, which should ease farm welfare problems. The Department of Health has issued public and scientifc guidance on the safe disposal of animal carasses which are available at http://www.co-ordination.gov.uk and http://www.doh.gov.uk/fmguidance.
