The draft directive is intended to replace the current directive (Directive 80/68/EEC) in 2013 but obligations under the new directive, if made law, will have to be met sooner. Under the new directive, member states will have to draw up threshold values for a number of pollutants identified as groundwater pollutants, athough only nitrates and pesticides have a specific limit in the draft.
