First in a series of three reports looking at the future of the retail industry in the UK. Identifies a number of factors which will have an impact on the retail sector including the introduction of the National Living Wage and the apprenticeship levy, growth in online shopping and automation. Predicts that there will be a reduction in the number of people employed in the sector which is currently the largest employee in the private sector. Calls for a review of business rates to help the sector. Concludes there will be fewer jobs but better quality positions in terms of reward and conditions of employment.
