First in series looks at how recent fire incidents have impacted on knowledge of how steel behaves in fire. Examines report published into the World Trade Center collapse and Madrid Windsor Torre Building office fire. Concludes that where a steel frame was fire protected it survived a complete burnout, but where they were not protected, columns collapsed. Suggests continued testing of steel frames in fire to ensure maintenance of standards. Concludes UK steel construction market now has large number of efficient fire protection manufacturers and costs are estimated to be less than 30% of real term costs of 20 years ago.
