The towers are back - 2001 - Construction News (6718) 31 May 2001, 26-27(2) .

Reports on the conference on tall buildings held at the RIBA 15 May 2001. Skyscrapers are seen by the Mayor of London as a means to increase urban density and allow office space to be let at rates competitive with Berlin, Frankfurt and Paris. This, he believes, will attract more global business to the city and ensure its continued prosperity. Experts, however, warn that increased construction costs, the challenges of building near-unique structures and the fact that historically many towers have been a poor investment for their first owners can lead to difficulties in raising finance for new projects. Also considers lift technology, the US precedent and the differing American and European development models.
