UK motorways worst in Europe

UK motorways worst in Europe - 2004 - Planning (for the Natural and Built Environment) 12 November 2004, 6(1) .

"Road fact file 2004" has been published by the Road Users Alliance. It states that the UK's network is 14th in a European league table of 15, based on a comparison between motorway length and gross domestic products. Motorways account for nearly 20% of all traffic but represent less than 1% of the UK's total road length. The report calculates that UK motorists pay £42.2bn a year in tax and inject an extra £75.2bn into the economy through vehicle purchase, fuel and basic running costs. Yet just £6.7bn was spent on roads infrastructure in 2003. The report can be found at: http://www.rua.org.uk/.
